WHEN Sunshine Coast mother Pauline O'Sullivan put her family on a strict "elimination" diet, it was a last resort.
"I experimented out of desperation," she said. "We decided to only follow it for one month and see what happened."
The result was that Mrs O'Sullivan noticed an improvement not only in the mood and health of her children, but the whole family.
For months she had been struggling to find a cause for eczema affecting her daughter Emmanuelle (Manny), 10.
So she put the family on the elimination diet used by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital allergy unit, excluding all additives.
That included avoiding naturally occurring chemicals in fruit and vegetables. The diet also recommends avoiding vinegar - which can be used as a natural preservative in bread.
She also realised additives were having an impact on her son, with a small fruit juice box containing enough preservatives to spark an uncontrollable tantrum.
"I probably wouldn't have known about the effect of the additives on my son if we hadn't been doing the diet for Manny," she said.
Mrs O'Sullivan (pictured centre) has teamed up with friend Michelle Kazukaitis (right) to launch theallergymenu.com - a website with a search engine to find recipes for people with multiple allergies and intolerances.
